About Keystone Corporation’s Tin Plating
Our tin plating has excellent solderability and ductility, as well as a long solderability shelf life. Additionally, tin is not easily oxidized by air, has good conductivity and is corrosion resistant. It is also generally considered to be non-toxic and non-carcinogenic. It’s even approved for food contact applications.
We offer both matte and bright tin electroplating for both Rack and Barrel applications.
Characteristics of Bright Tin
Parts finished with bright tin have a shiny, aesthetically pleasing surface finish with a high degree of luster. It also provides a lower coefficient of friction for mating with other parts, circuit boards and connectors when compared to matte tin.
Bright tin has a smaller grain size than matte tin (1-9 um diameter for matte versus the sub-micron range of 0.1 um for bright). The smaller grain size presents a more uniform surface for reflecting light, creating a shiny appearance.
Matte or Solderable Tin Characteristics
Matte tin deposits are free of co-deposited brighteners found in bright tin plating. It will retain its original color under high temperatures.
Matte tin plated parts are better suited for solder reflow processes and suffer less stress effects from elevated temperatures. Matte tin plating is best suited for lead-free reflow solder processes that have higher temperatures, typically in the range of 250C – 260C.
