ELECTROLESS NICKEL PLATING

Electroless Nickel plating is an alloy of Nickel and Phosphorous. As the name implies, the deposit is the result of an autocatalytic chemical reaction without the use of an external electrical charge. One of the primary benefits of Electroless Nickel is that the process deposits metal uniformly on all surfaces, regardless of part geometry. The resulting finish, which is similar to stainless steel in appearance, is both durable and appealing. The majority of Electroless Nickel plating for engineering purposes has a phosphorus content of 7%-12%. The higher the phosphorus content the greater the corrosion resistance, although deposits with higher phosphorus content do exhibit reduced hardness.

Keystone Corporation is an industry leader in plating Electroless Nickel on aluminum and stainless steel substrates. Electroless Nickel can also be applied to copper, brass, steel, and bronze.  In the early 1950’s, Keystone Corporation held the original patent for the Kanigen Electroless Nickel process that is used by the majority of platers today.

Keystone's Electroless Nickel plating is used in a wide range of applications including:

  • Military
  • Aerospace
  • Communications
  • Automotive
  • Industrial Machinery

FEATURES OF ELECTROLESS NICKEL PLATING:

  • Very smooth and even coatings can be achieved, regardless of the geometry of the part being plated.
  • Great flexibility in plating volume and thickness.
  • Provides good coverage in blind holes and recesses.
  • Provides uniform plating thicknesses over inside and outside surfaces.
  • Heat treated deposits compare in hardness to hard chrome.
  • Provides extremely low coefficient of friction.
  • Provides excellent corrosion resistance with thicknesses above .0005".
  • Electroless nickel coatings provide excellent surface finishes for shielding EMF and RF electronics.
